Hometown News: Digging Up Depew

A major Environmental Protection Agency cleanup is aimed at removing lead-contaminated soil from dozens of Depew yards. The EPA is removing trees and shrubs and digging up flower beds, on 66 properties between Transit Road and Walden Avenue that have been contaminated, mostly with lead, by former industrial plants nearby. The work will cost about four-and-a-half-million dollars, and take about two years to finish.

Depew Man Still Missing

Depew Police and a sheriff's helicopter took part in a so-far unsuccessful search for a distraught man. Monday morning, John Weinberg contacted his father to say that he had a shotgun, and the father then called the cops. SWAT teams surrounded Weinberg's home on Cornell Drive. After seven hours, the home was entered, but Weinberg was gone, and neighbors expressed concern.
