Hometown Sports: Sabres Falling Short

Marian Hossa scored twice in a three-goal third period as the Red Wings skated past the Sabres 4-1 at HSBC Arena. Hometown Sports: Sabres Surrender Key Point
The Sabres saw their playoff chances take a brutal hit last night, as Ilya Kovalchuk scored the game-winner with 29.9 seconds left in overtime, to lead the Atlanta Thrashers to a 3-2 win at Philips Arena. With time running down in the extra period, Thomas Vanek's shot was blocked by Kovalchuk and the Thrashers star was able to beat Ryan Miller on the ensuing breakaway. Vanek had a pair of power-play goals for the Sabres, who were trying to extend a three-game winning streak and improve their dwinding postseason chances. Buffalo is now five points behind the Canadiens for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Sabres concludes a three-game road trip at Washington on Friday, with just about no margin for error left.

Hometown Sports: Sabres Win, Miller Headed Back
Jason Pominville had a goal and two assists as the Sabres used a four-goal third period to rally past the Panthers, 5-3, at HSBC Arena. Craig Rivet, Clarke MacArthur, Maxim Afinogenov and Tim Connolly also found the net for Buffalo, which put the brakes on a four-game skid. The win moved the Sabres within five points of Montreal in the race for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East. Pominville said it was a huge comeback triumph
Looks like goalie Ryan Miller will be back in action Friday night. Coach Lindy Ruff thinks Miller will return to the nets for the game against Toronto at HSBC Arena. The goalie suffered a high-ankle sprain injured leg February 21st during a game against the Rangers.

Hometown Sports: Sabres Play on Deadline Day
On NHL Trade Deadline Day, the struggling Sabres host the red-hot Montreal Canadiens tonight at HSBC Arena. The Canadiens have won four in a row, while Buffalo has dropped three straight and four of their last five, to drop outside the Eastern Conference playoff race for the time being. On a positive note, Buffalo expects to have leading goal scorer Thomas Vanek back on the ice tonight after he missed nine games with a fractured jaw.
Today is the last day for NHL clubs to make deals. The league trade deadline is at 3 p.m. Eastern. Columbus and Ottawa pulled off the first trade, as the Blue Jackets dealt goaltender Pascal Leclaire and a second-round pick in the 2009 draft to the Senators in exchange for forward Antoine Vermette. Still possibly changing uniforms are defensemen Jay Bouwmeester and Chris Pronger, and forwards Bill Guerin and Olli Jokinen. The Sabres buzz revolves around center Tim Connolly, who will probably either be resigned to a multi-year deal, or dealt away.
