HTN: Survey Questions Paterson's Senate Process

A new poll surveyed New Yorkers on the job Governor Paterson did a filling the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Hillary Clinton. A Sienna College poll finds that 33-percent of voters thought he did a fair job filling the seat, while 29-percent thought it was poor. Only 27-percent said the process was good and six-percent rated it as excellent. After keeping New Yorkers guessing about Caroline Kennedy, Paterson appointed Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand to fill the seat.

HTN: Senate Summit Meeting

Senate designee Kirsten Gillibrand met with Hillary Clinton Sunday in Manhattan. The meeting at the Waldorf Astoria also included Governor David Paterson and Senator Chuck Schumer. At a press conference after the meeting, Paterson did a lot of the talking, defending his choice.
Paterson also said he gave "no signal" for Caroline Kennedy to withdraw her name from consideration, and that Kennedy had "nothing prohibiting her" from serving in the Senate. For her part, Gillibrand says she plans to hit the ground running.

Standing in front of a large group of state dignitaries, Governor David Paterson announced his selection to replace Hillary Clinton in the US Senate. Paterson also announced that Kirsten Gillebrand's appointment is on an interim basis. Gillibrand was selected ahead of State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown, Congressman Brian Higgins, and several other candidates. She was the first woman elected to represent the 20th District, which spans Eastern New York from Dutchess to Essex Counties.

Senator Edward Kennedy collapsed near the conclusion of the Congressional lunch for President Obama. He was taken away by ambulance after reportedly suffering convulsions during the event.

Paterson did not rule out that scenario to reporters Wednesday in Albany. However, the Governor says he does not want to distract from the historic Inauguration and believes the nomination will come sometime after Obama's swearing-in. More New York State voters prefer State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to replace Senator Hillary Clinton, with some saying they don't think Caroline Kennedy is qualified for the job. Cuomo leads 31 to 24-percent in a Quinnipiac University poll. However, 38 perecent beieve that Governor Paterson will appoint Ms. Kennedy to the U.S. Senate.

Senator Hillary Clinton took questions this morning on Capitol Hill as her confirmation hearing to become Secretary of State opened. Clinton is appearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and is expected to receive approval, despite questions about her husband, former President Bill Clinton's overseas business dealings. The Senate committee is scheduling one day for Clinton's hearing. The Senate is poised to confirm Clinton next Tuesday, when Barack Obama is sworn in as president.

Caroline Kennedy got some face time with Governor Paterson, whose opinion is the only one that matters in deciding a replacement for Senator Hillary Clinton. Kennedy met with Paterson in his New York City office over the weekend to discuss her credentials. The governor has been meeting with several candidates as he tries to make a decision.
