HTN: First H1N1 Case in Erie County
Erie County has its first confirmed case of swine flu. The County Health Department says a middle school student in the Williamsville School District caught the disease. However, the virus has been mild and the Transit Middle School case is no exception. The only other instance of swine flu in Western New York was in the Bemus Point Central School District in Chautauqua County. After recent school closings, health officials say one case will not be enough to shutter an entire school or district. Officials remind everyone to wash their hands and stay home if they feel sick.

Hometown News: Swine Flu Alert
Governor David Paterson has declared a public health emergency in New York State after eight cases of swine flu were confirmed. Paterson has activated the state's health emergency preparedness plan and has put the state on high alert to quickly identify and respond to any suspected cases of swine flu. At a Sunday news conference, Governor Paterson said a swine flu hotline received hundreds of calls in the first four hours of operation. The hotline number is 1-800-808-1987. A private school in Queens was closed for today and tomorrow after eight students test positive for swine flu.

HTN: Helipad Denied to Emergency Service
Women's and Children's Hospital will not allow the Starflight helicopter to land on its helipad. The hospital says that Starflight never sought clearance to land there. Since Starlight doesn't have authorization, critically injured children must be flown to the parking lot of the Erie County Medical Center, and then taken by ambulance, a 12-minute ride to Women and Children's.

HTN: Company Moving Operations to Medical Campus
The Buffalo-Niagara Medical Campus is set to become the home of a medical device manufacturing operation. SmartPill Corp. will be shifting its operations from Los Angeles to Buffalo starting May 8th. There will be an initial workforce of five assemblers, with the hope of doubling that next year. The SmartPill System uses an ingestible capsule, which is outfitted with sensors to monitor gastrointestinal health.
