Hometown News: SPCA Confiscates Animals in South Buffalo

A menagerie of 100 animals ranging from chickens, iguanas, rabbits, ferrets and tarantulas is in the custody of the SPCA after being seized from a small apartment in South Buffalo. George and Ellen Zimmerman protested, explaining they took in animals that people left at their door, and that the couple didn't do anything wrong."

Infant Injured in Dog Attack

A three-month-old boy was attacked Sunday afternoon by a Bull Terrier. The boy reportedly suffered injuries from his chest all the way down to his lower abdomen. Tonawanda Police said he underwent emergency surgery at Buffalo Women and Children's Hospital and was transferred to the ICU. The SPCA currently has the dog and another pit bull from the home in custody.

Alleged Animal Cruelty on the Island

A Grand Island stable owner was charged Tuesday with 17 counts of animal cruelty, when authorities seized 12 horses and five sheep from his business. Peter Sparks, owner of Sparks Trading Post on Bedell Road, contested the seizures, but declined to comment further.

Animals Seized in Newstead

The SPCA raided a home on Stage Road in Newstead after learning there were a number of neglected animals inside. They seized 46 rabbits along with cockatiels, parakeets and three cats. The owner is out of town but was contacted and ordered back to face misdemeanor animal cruelty charges.
