Pominville Resigns with Sabres

The Buffalo Sabres agreed to terms on a five-year contract extension with forward Jason Pominville on Thursday. Pominville tallied 27 goals and a career-high 53 assists while playing in all 82 games last season. The 25-year-old has posted 61 goals and 87 helpers in three NHL seasons, all with Buffalo.

NFTA Considering Fare Hikes

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority is considering a 25-cent jump in bus and rail fares to cover rising costs. That would push a bus ride from a-dollar-50 for a one-way ride to a-buck-75. The NFTA says that ridership is at an all time high but fare increases are needed for growing demand. While the NFTA is going to one-75, just earlier this month the bus company that serves the Rochester-area, the RGRTA, lowered their fares from a-dollar-25 down to a dollar.

Susan Elbaneh Remembered

Friends, relatives and students held a memorial service for the young victim of this week's attack on the U.S. embassy in Yemen -- as 18-year-old Susan Elbaneh was remembered during an assembly that filled the auditorium at Lackawanna High School, where she was a senior. Her sister spoke at the service.

Statler Gets New Owner

The Statler Towers on Delaware Avenue have a new ownership group. The Greystone Group has purchased then old hotel for some 3-point-8-million dollars from developer Bashar Issa. The new group plans on using union labor to renovate the building and turn parts of it back into a hotel. The group hopes to get backing from the Building Trades Council pension funds.

Bus Ride Could Cost More

The NFTA is considering a hike in fares to cover rising fuel costs. An increase would push up the cost of a Metro Bus or Rail ticket from $1.50 to $1.75. The extra cost is being propsed despite the fact that Metro Bus and Rail ridership is at an all-time high.

County Need a Loan by Month's End

Erie County Comptroller Mark Poloncarz is nervous. He says he needs to borrow 75-million dollars by September 30th. It's a normal business practice for the county, but Poloncarz is worried because the control board says it's going to do it because it can get a lower interest rate. The problem is that the money may not get into the county accounts before the end of the month and that would mean slow payment to vendors and possible not enough money to cover county paychecks.

Lackawanna Mourns Student Terror Victim

An high school student from Lackawanna was among those killed yesterday in a pair of car bombings near the U.S. embassy in Yemen. 18-year-old Susan Elbaneh had traveled to Yemen over the summer to get married. Elbaneh and her new husband were at the embassy filling out paperwork that would let them move back to New York when the bombings occurred.
A Yemeni government spokesman said at least 16 people were killed in the blasts, including six attackers. A Yemeni national who worked as a guard at the embassy was among those killed, but the State Department said all American diplomatic staff were safe.

Two Biomedical Grants in Buffalo

Two windfalls for bio technologies in Buffalo come as good news today. Cleveland BioLabs announced a 13-point-three-million-dollar federal grant to finance the development of a drug. University of Buffalo will receive a three-million-dollar grant from the John R. Oishei Foundation. They announced it will create a department of biomedical engineering with the money.

School Bus Accident in Morning Rush

No children were hurt on a school bus when it got into an accident today. The bus was on East Delavan avenue during rush hour and 19 children were on board. The accident on the ramp from East Delavan and Humboldt parkway is a busy area, and police and fire responded to the scene.

County may Run Out of Money

Erie County Comptroller Mark Poloncarz warned he will not be able to pay the county government's bills next month or pay employees unless he or the control board can secure a 75-million-dollar short term loan by September 30th. The state appointed control board says it will handle the government's loans. Poloncarz said he hopes they can borrow the money quickly and notes it is his duty to warn the county and citizen about things like this.

lackawanna Woman Reported Killed in Yemen

Reports today that a Lackawanna woman and her Yemeni husband were killed in a blast at the U.S. Embassy in Yemen. Susan Elbaneh was 18. A car bomb hit the embassy and four civilians were killed. Susan was married to a Yemeni man last month, and she and her new husband were going to return to Lackawanna.

Deputy Arrested for Contact with Inmate

An Erie County sheriff's deputy was arrested after accusations of inappropriate contact with a 34-year-old female inmate at Alden Correctional. Deputy Anthony Vick, a six-year veteran has been charged with second-degree sexual abuse. Vick reportedly resigned his position this morning.

Windstorm Damages NFTA Boat Slips

Damage from the Sunday night wind storm knocked nearly 300 slip holders off their boats at the Fuhrmann Boulevard boat harbor. NFTA officials say that three docks at the outer harbor marina were ripped from their concrete bases, cutting off pier access to 284 boat slips.

Victims ID'd in Daytime Shootings

Buffalo Police have identified a 19-year-old shot to death Monday afternoon on the West Side. Omar Fraticelli-Lugo of West Avenue died at Buffalo General after he was shot in the chest on Busti Avenue just after 4 p.m. Monday, in an apparent drive-by shooting. 17-year-old Luis Medina of Seventh Street was also grazed, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening, police said.

School Shooting in T-O

An apparent school shooting in Toronto today: Bendale Business and Technical Institute was in lockdown after a 17-year-old boy was shot in the hallway. The victim was rushed to the hospital in serious condition. Police are searching for either one or two suspects.

One Dead, One Wounded in East Side Shooting

Buffalo Detectives are investigating an overnight shooting at a bar that left a woman dead. Police say the shooting at Lee's Lounge on Fillmore happened just after midnight. A 51-year old woman was rushed to ECMC where she was pronounced dead. The other person who was shot has not been located.

Last WNY Krispy Kreme Kloses

Krispy Kreme has closed its last store in Western New York. 2021 Walden Avenue went out of business on Saturday. Two dozen employees lost their jobs. Now, the closest Krispy Kreme to Buffalo is in Erie, P-A.

Work Continues on Washington St.

Washington Street between East Eagle and Clinton Streets will remained closed for another week as crews continue to work to repair an underground vault. A number of pipes are covered with asbestos, and a sewer line has collapsed. The project could cost up to 100-thousand dollars, and the city plans to bill the owner of the vault.

Power Outages Persist after Ike Rolls Through

About 75-hundred National Grid customers are still without power after Western New York got a little taste of Hurricane Ike overnight. Some customers may have to wait until Tuesday night for their power. Most of those affected are in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua and Allegany counties.3
