HTN: Local Soldier Honored

Flags on state government buildings are flying at half-staff today, to honor a local soldier who died after training exercises in Iraq. Twenty-four-year-old Army Sergeant Daniel Beard, a Buffalo native, collapsed and died April 3rd.

HTN: Lockport Soldier Honored

Flags across New York State will fly at half-staff on Thursday to honor Lockport native Albert Jex, the Army Private who was killed in Iraq on February 9th. His vehicle hit an improvised explosive device in Mosul. Three other American soldiers were killed in the blast.

HTN: Lockport Honors Fallen Soldier

Lockport is looking to honor its fallen son, Army PFC Albert Jex, who died Monday in a suicide bombing. Mayor Michael Tucker says the city will do whatever it can for the family at the funeral. City flags were lowered to half-staff, and a tree will be planted in Jax's memory at the Lockport Opportunity Project, wehre he was a student.

HTN: Lockport Soldier Killed in Iraq

The war in Iraq has claimed the life of a young man from Lockport. Army private 23-year-old Albert Jex was one of four Americans killed in a suicide car bombing in the northern city of Mosul Monday. It was the deadliest attack on U.S. troops in the past nine months. Officials say military vehicles were passing an Iraqi checkpoint when the bomb exploded.

Soldier's Body Brought Back to WNY

A local soldier who died in Iraq has been brought home for final rest. Private First Class Patrick May was killed earlier this month in a non-combat injury near Baghdad. May's body was returned to an East Aurora funeral home yesterday. Funeral services are planned for the Jamestown native this coming Saturday.

Local Soldier Dies in iraq

The Department of Defense has announced the death of a soldier in Baghdad. Private First Class Patrick May, 22 years old, of Jamestown, N.Y., died Sept. 2 in Baghdad, Iraq, in a non-combat related incident. He had been part of the Division Special Troops Battalion, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), out of Fort Drum, N.Y. The incident is under investigation.

Local Soldier Wounded in Iraq

Local soldier Joseph Browning of Evans has been in the Army since 2003 and is now on his second tour of duty. On Monday, a gunman targeted him and his fellow soldiers just outside of Baghdad. The Department of Defense confirms one soldier was killed, five others including Joseph were wounded. He was taken to a military hospital in Germany.

914ers Back from Iraq

Seventy-four members of the 914th Airlift Wing are set to return to Niagara Falls this afternoon after serving in Iraq and Southwest Asia. Families and colleagues will greet the returnees at 2 this afternoon at the Falls Air Reserve Station.

Iraq Veteran Gains Appeal

Twenty-six-year-old James Raymond has served in Iraq. He came home with a hearing injury and was put on a ten-percent disability pension of 120-dollars a month. He enrolled at the University of Buffalo and then got orders to report back for duty. Raymond complained that he isn't sure it would be safe for his comrades in arms for him to be back on the front lines with his hearing impairment. Local political pressure has lead the army to allow Raymond to finish the semester at UB and they say they will take up to three months to review his appeal. He won't have to report to Fort Benning by May 18th as originally ordered.

Collins Soldier Closer to Home

An Army sergeant from the Town of Collins, who lost his legs in a roadside bombing in Iraq in March has been moved by medical flight to a rehabilitation center in Boston. Twenty-six-year old James Hackemer had been undergoing treatment at the Bethesda Naval Medical Center. He'll eventually go to Walter Reed to be fitted for artificial limbs. Sergeant Hackemer is married with two young children. His wife was on the flight with him.

Cote Family to Speak Today

Sad word from the family of Jonathon Cote. The former resident of Amherst's body has been officially identified by the U.S. government. It was found recently in Iraq where Jonathon had been working as a private security guard. He and four co-workers were kidnapped in November of 2006. The bodies of the others were recovered last month. The 25-year-old Cote had been missing for some 17 months and his family in Western New York was holding out hope that he was still alive. His father has been keeping an internet site concerning his son. The family says they will talk with the media later today.

Concern for Cote Family

The family of missing private security contractor Jonathon Cote has been visited by government officials who told them a sixth body has been recovered in Iraq. Cote was among a group of contractors kidnapped in 2006. The unidentified body is being flown back to Dover, Delaware for identification.
